Though the morning after that snowstorm was clear and bright, I just couldn't help thinking about what had happened the day before. In my heart it seemed as if the snow had not stopped, but was falling still. And the snowflakes seemed to merge into the form of Kiyo's face. How I wished that I could live somewhere where the snow fell every day of the year so that I would never stop thinking of you, Kiyo.

If we were living in Heian times, you would have composed a poem for me, wouldn't you? And I would have had to offer one of my own in reply. I am shocked to think that although I have been learning waka since my childhood, at a time like this I can't set down a single poem to express my feelings. Is it because I lack the talent?

Why do you believe that I'm so happy? Just because I have found someone who is kind enough not to be upset by whatever I say or do, no matter how capricious? That would be the same as thinking that I enjoy treating Kiyo however I choose - and nothing could cause me greater pain than to know that you believe this.

No, what really makes me happy is your gentleness. You were able to see through that whim of mine the other day. You could see how desperate I secretly felt. And without a word of reproach you came with me on that ride through the snow and you fulfilled the dream that I had buried deep inside me with so much embarrassment That is what I mean by your gentleness.

Kiyo, even now, remembering what happened, I feel my body tremble with joy and shame. Here in Japan, we think of the spirit of snow as a woman - the snow fairy. But I remember that in Western fairy tales I read it's always a handsome young man. And so I think of Kiyo as the spirit of snow, so masculine in your uniform. I think of you as overwhelming me. To feel myself dissolve into your beauty and freeze to death in the snow - no fate could be sweeter.

Please be kind enough not to forget to throw this letter into the fire.

LONGER VERSION
Satoko was born into one of the oldest, formerly noble families in Japan, and in past times, also one of the most wealthy. However, due to some unfortunate investments made by first her grandfather and then, her father, their wealth has dwindled over the years until they've come to a point where they can barely even uphold their expected living standards.

Nevertheless, in honor of their former glory and what they undoubtedly still know of manners and propriety, the wealthy car manufacturing family, the Matsugaes, sent their son to receive schooling with Satoko, when the two were both very young and as such, the children grew up together, Satoko two years older than Kiyoaki, Matsugae's son. This resulted in Satoko developing a crush on Kiyoaki that he, for many years, refused to acknowledge with anything but scorn, but she patiently waited for him to return her feelings - unfortunately, Kiyoaki didn't truly notice her until the year her parents started looking around, groom-shopping.

Their hope was to be able to marry her off to another old money family, one that had their finances under control, and thus would be able to raise the Ayakuras to their former glory. Satoko had no interest in this scheme, but saw no way out of the arrangement when her parents managed to introduce her to the Minister of the Defence's son, Harunori Toin, himself - at the tender age of 30 - a general of the armed forces, and Harunori immediately fell in love with her.

Yes, fate had to make it so that this was also the time when Kiyoaki fell in love with her and she had the choice between honoring her parents' plans or follow her own heart. Unquestioningly choosing to do the latter, she intiated an affair with Kiyoaki, despite being soon engaged to Harunori, and for a while, it seemed possible she might be able to both please herself and her family.

Nevertheless, that was when she realized that she was pregnant and it could only be Kiyoaki's child. Determined to start a family with him, however, run away if she had to, she was intercepted by Tadeshina, her father's old mistress who had acted as a chaperone for Satoko since she went into puberty. The old woman betrayed her secret to her father and it was immediately decided, she was to have an abortion.

Kiyoaki, meanwhile, was to be sent to the UK to finish his studies, far away from her, so that the Ayakura family's name wouldn't suffer any shameful revelations, once Satoko had married Harunori. Because, the wedding was to commence as hitherto planned, Satoko now simply emptier and poorer for it.

The next five years of her life, she lives the trophy wife lifestyle, leisure-studying literature at university and spending most of her monthly allowances and most of her time on cultural pursuits, she takes a special interest in the ballet where she serves as patron for various rising male dancers, some of them her lovers.

Although Harunori genuinely loves her, she has no love left for the man who cost her everything she wanted and he accepts her distance, her infidelities, living his own life on the side.

CANON

canon: The Sea of Fertility, specifically the first volume, Spring Snow (Yukio Mishima)
summary: Here.
canon point: Defaulting to early timeline, before or right after her engagement to Prince Harunori.
notes: Open to AU'ing Satoko into other canons, including modern AUs, although would like to discuss first before assuming modern era. My pref is for historical settings from various points of Western or Japanese history, fantasy AU's or steampunk AU's. While I play Satoko from the book, I like to incorporate elements from the Takarazuka musical adaption of the story (Tsukigumi, 2012) which is also where my PB is from. However, the novel is my primary source for canon.
character blurb: The 20 to 22-year-old daughter of a Japanese aristocrat, whose family has fallen on hard times in the early Taisho era, so she becomes engaged to a prince whom she doesn't want to marry, seeing as she's in already in love with Kiyoaki. As a person, she is spirited, capricious and most notoriously, sports a rather terrible taste in men which is the plot of the entire book, spoiler.

contact: PM to this journal. [plurk.com profile] thewriteway
active times/pace: CEST/CET player. Tries to be online at least during the evening my time, but it varies. More one tag a day player than anything, but if you hit me up at the right time, I can still boomerang a bit.
brackets/prose: Definitely brackets preference, but will match. I default to present tense, but can also match other tenses.
offensive subjects/triggers: Not any.

IN CHARACTER

physical affection: Go for it. She will not be the most receptive, but she won't get violent or difficult about it.
physical violence: I'd prefer not.
relationships: F/M or F/F. Canon OTPs are all over the place, Satoko/Kiyoaki, Satoko/Harunori and Satoko/Tadeshina (don't look at me like that, watch the musical and you'll get why). Open to x-canon and OCs.
psychic info: She has no mental barriers and will be an easy read. Ask if you need more info.
magical info: No magical powers. Not opposed to playing opposite characters who do have them.
medical info: Later in her canon, she gets a secret abortion of the child she and Kiyoaki have conceived and suffers greatly mentally because of this, but it will never come up in my narrative with her.
offensive subjects/triggers: Canon features unsafe abortion, various illnesses, violence and mental illness, though I don't play Satoko from a canon point where any of this comes up.

OUT OF CHARACTER

backtagging: Yes, please!
threadhopping: No.
fourthwalling: Go ahead.
not interested in: Smut, neither M/F or F/F.
